"Trust God's Word and His power
more than you trust
your own feelings and experiences.
and it is the sea that ebbs and flows
with the tides, not Him."
~ Samuel Rutherford (March 10 of Streams in the Desert by L.B. Cowman)

He waits. He waits. No matter the pattern of your life, No matter the color of your fabric, He waits. He waits, for you. |
* Are you willing and able to live fully right where you are?
~ Yes and no. Sometimes I try and succeed and usually when I get it right, it's because I am living this hymn:
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it,
Mount of Thy redeeming love.
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing;
Robert Robinson, 1735-1790
~ When it's not working, when my focus get off-kilter, and when I get all outta whack, it's generally because I have become so comfortable with my own soul holes that I've made an idol out of my despair.
* What about you? How do you live fully
right where you are?
I am reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.
Since I am not keen on crowds I'll just sorta share my thoughts, mingled with quotes, scripture, songs, and images, right here on the sidelines.

i recently ordered the book and waiting for it to arrive.
Wow, there is sooooo much in this post. I need to spend some time with it. Thanks...I love the phrase 'soul holes'.

This is beautiful! I just treasure Ann's book and know that all who read it will. I pray God will empty all of the darkness from our hearts and fill them with His light. Have a blessed day!
When you talk about making an "idol out of my despair" you kicked me in the fanny. I think of Simon and Garfunkel, "Hello Darkness, my old friend..."
It does become a comfortable blanket that I wrap myself in and enventually worship
Sidelines can be nice too. I usually prefer them :)
Making an idol out of my despair? Wow. We do that, don't we?
Do you know the story behind that hymn? It's pretty powerful:

I like your approach to this.
your banner ... I am flummoxed by it ... and I get no further
Might I join you on the sidelines? It's more my speed. :)
"Making an idle out of despair" - now there's a sobering thought. And motivating, too.
Living in the moment, being and accepting, these are hard things for us humans. I am learning about the practice of "mindfulness" which is gaining much traction in pyschological and scientific circles these days, as a healthy means of slowing down the mind and practicing the presence of now.
